Bronze Casting April 24, 2012 | By Adam Harris
Do you know how complex the bronze casting process is?
This little bear, created by Gerald Balciar, has to go through no less than 10 different steps to make its way from clay model to finished bronze. Visitors to the Museum can see the various stages laid out at the end of the King Gallery. The display is complemented by a kiosk which features a multimedia program taking interested parties through the process. The Virtual Foundry program (aka Lost Wax, Found Bronze) is also available on the museum’s website.
This display came to mind yesterday as I thought about the amazing amount of work that goes into the sculptures we are installing on the Sculpture Trail this summer. Our part of the job, which is to securely position the sculptures where they can be safely appreciated, is the final step in a long, long process – easy in comparison to all the behind-the-scenes work that goes into the production of each piece!
