National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West

National Geographic Greatest Photos of the American West
Oct. 27, 2012 - Apr. 28, 2013

A collection of iconic Western images gathered by National Geographic over a span of some 125 years, will open in 10 museums across the U.S. on Saturday, October 27. National Geographic Greatest Photographs of the American West represents the first time a photography exhibition of this magnitude has opened at so many U.S. venues simultaneously. From the surprising photograph of an owl caught in flight by Mike Nichols, which required ridiculous amounts of equipment, time and thousands of missed attempts to create that one remarkable image, to the aerial maneuvers used by others to capture fresh perspectives on the Western landscape, this new exhibition demonstrates photographers pushing all kinds of limits to bridge the gap between documentary and fine art photography. At the same time the 75 images chosen from the thousands in the National Geographic archives provide a powerful and nuanced real-time portrait of the American West over more than a century.

Wildlife of the American West
Oct. 6, 2012 -Apr. 21, 2013
Honoring the 25th Anniversary of the Museum this exhibit pulls together works on paper including drawings, prints, and watercolors from the collection as it existed when the Museum was known as the Wildlife of the American West, located on the Jackson Hole Town Square from 1987 to 1993. Wildlife of the American West Art Museum focused on contemporary and historic art of this region and included work by artists such as Alfred Jacob Miller, Albert Bierstadt, Charles M. Russell, Frederic Remington, Bob Kuhn, Ken Carlson, and Robert Bateman. This is a great chance to see amazing artwork depicting the American West, think about the origins of the Museum, and see how our institution has grown.
