On View May 28 – October 4, 2026
Great art moves us. But what about art that actually moves?
Kinetic sculpture is art that incorporates motion. The motion can be powered by gears, magnets, air currents, water, gravity, or direct interaction from the viewer. This exhibit features kinetic sculptures by Michigan-based artist Ivan Iler. Iler’s first works of art were custom motorcycles, which he began fabricating as a teenager. He later turned those skills in metalworking, engineering, and design into a career creating large kinetic sculptures from found materials. Combining art and science, whimsy and mechanics, Iler creates art that inspires awe, curiosity, and creativity.
Art in Motion: Kinetic Sculpture with Ivan Iler also features work by other contemporary artists, from the National Museum of Wildlife Art’s permanent collection and a community call for art. Visitors are encouraged to look for instructions inviting them to safely engage with select sculptures and set them in motion.
Find two more monumental sculptures by Ivan Iler, African Elephant and Unicorn, outdoors along the Museum’s Sculpture Trail.
