An Evening with Diné Weaver and Fiber Artist Roy Kady at the National Museum of Wildlife Art

October 9, 2025

The National Museum of Wildlife Art invites the community to an inspiring evening with Diné (Navajo) weaver and fiber artist Roy Kady in the Museum’s Cook Auditorium on Thursday, October 16, 2025, from 6 to 7 p.m.

Kady, who describes himself as both a shepherd and an artist, will share insights into his creative process, inspirations, and the deep cultural roots of his work. Having learned to weave at the age of nine from his grandmother, grandfather, and mother, Kady’s artistry is intertwined with his heritage and the landscapes that shape his daily life.

Guided by his flocks through the Arizona wilderness, Kady draws color and form directly from the natural world. The earthy hues and geometric patterns in his weavings reflect the terrain and spirit of the land. “That’s what traditional Navajo weaving is: an interpretation of your environment,” the Diné artist told Hyperallergic in an interview. During this event, Kady will discuss his artistic journey and creative practice and will present a 15-minute clip from the documentary A Gift From Talking God, which explores his life as a shepherd and the cultural importance of the Navajo-Churro sheep in Navajo tradition.

Kady’s artwork Tell Me A Secret is currently on view in the Museum’s Wapiti Gallery as part of the exhibition A Conceptual Thread, on display through November 2, 2025. This exhibition is a celebration of textile and fiber arts—quilting, weaving, tapestry, and knitting.

This free community event offers a unique opportunity to hear directly from an artist whose work honors tradition, place, and the enduring relationship between people, animals, and the land. Snacks and nonalcoholic beverages will be provided.
