National Museum of Wildlife Art Honored as #1 Western Art Museum by True West Magazine!

August 8, 2023

The National Museum of Wildlife Art has been named the Top Western Art Museum for 2023 by True West Magazine. This is the 18th year True West has presented this annual award. Editors, led by Johnny D. Boggs, base their selection on criteria evaluating exhibits, facilities, multi-media and online accessibility, events, and promotion of historic/cultural resources. Hundreds of great art museums in the American West exemplify the spirit and dedication of the pioneers and the artists who captured them and their lives. But 10 of them stand out—and these are the True Western Art Museums of 2023, according to True West Magazine’s September 2023 issue, out on newsstands on August 8, 2023.

The art museums of the year are:

  1. Tacoma Art Museum (Tacoma, WA).
  2. Chisholm Trail Heritage Center (Duncan, OK).
  3. Heard Museum (Phoenix, AZ).
  4. Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum (Canyon, TX).
  5. Desert Caballeros Western Museum (Wickenburg, AZ).
  6. The Nelson Museum of the West (Cheyenne, WY).
  7. Taos Art Museum at Fechin House (Taos, NM).
  8. Museum of Western Art (Kerrville, TX).
  9. Eiteljorg Museum (Indianapolis, IN).

And the Top Western Art Museum for 2023…

  1. National Museum of Wildlife Art (Jackson, WY).

“Being named the top Western art museum in the country is a huge honor,” says Museum Director Steve Seamons. “We are thrilled that the True West editors voted for the National Museum of Wildlife Art and granted us this wonderful recognition.”

Featuring works by artists ranging from John James Audubon to Andy Warhol–depicting wildlife and nature–the National Museum of Wildlife Art stood out to editors. That is one reason the National Museum of Wildlife Art is Number 1 among True West Magazine’s 2023 Top Western Art Museums.

“The National Museum of Wildlife Art focuses on one of the most important aspects of the Old West—the animals,” says True West Executive Editor Bob Boze Bell. “It has done an amazing job in preserving Western art on the subject and presenting it to the world. There’s no question: the National Museum of Wildlife Art is the Top Western Art Museum.”
