National Museum of Wildlife Art to Host North American Debut of “Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom”

October 26, 2026

The National Museum of Wildlife Art (NMWA) announces the opening of Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom, an inspiring photography exhibition that invites visitors to reflect on the past, understand the present, and collectively shape a more sustainable future. On view from October 31, 2026 through May 9, 2027, the exhibition is organized and traveled by the National Geographic Society and Gallerie d’Italia, Intesa Sanpaolo’s museums.

For thirty years, Cristina “Mitty” Mittermeier has traveled the globe as an artist, author, and activist, documenting the beauty of the planet, its wild inhabitants, and the cultures and traditions of the people who call it home. “Cristina Mittermeier coined the term ‘conservation photography’ and has used her art as a powerful tool for change. We are honored to partner with the National Geographic Society to host the North American debut of her exhibition, previously shown only in Italy, and know it will resonate deeply with our audience,” said Chief Curator of Art Kennis Forte, Ph.D. Mittermeier’s photographs capture the changing landscapes and seascapes of Earth, along with the communities that continue to live in harmony with fragile ecosystems.

At the heart of her work are the stories of people who maintain a deep connection with nature and understand the delicate balance of their environments. “The concept of A Greater Wisdom has a clear affinity with our mission here at the National Museum of Wildlife Art. Through a deeper understanding of the interconnectedness we all share with one another, with wildlife, and with the planet we call home, we can become better stewards of nature,” said Chief Marketing Officer Madison Webb Stanko. Mittermeier’s images bear witness to rituals and knowledge handed down through generations, and through her lens, viewers are invited to reflect on A Greater Wisdom.

This exhibition showcases Mittermeier’s guiding philosophy of enoughness—a powerful mindset, inspired by the wisdom of traditional communities, which encourages a deeper understanding of our place in the global ecosystem. It affirms our intrinsic worth and aligns our decisions with the natural cycles of the living world.

“Images can help us understand the urgency many photographers feel to protect wild places. My work is about building a greater awareness of the responsibility of what it means to be human. It is about understanding that the history of every living thing that has ever existed on this planet also lives within us. It is about the ethical imperative—the urgent reminder that we are linked to all other species on this planet and that we have a duty to act as the keepers of our fellow life forms,” said Cristina Mittermeier.

Cristina Mittermeier: A Greater Wisdom is sponsored by Jeffrey Cohen, Marnie & Tasso Coin, Leslye, David, and Lachlan Hardie, M.J.
